A Weary And Waiting Savior
“Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.” (John 4:6)
The very familiar Bible story of the Lord Jesus Christ meeting the Samaritan woman at the well of Samaria has great spiritual significance and it is a true story. The Bible relates to us that His journey through Samaria was one of divine appointment and necessity. “He must needs go through Samaria.” This was not the general route for Jewish people; they avoided Samaria, for the Jews had no dealings with the Samaritans. The Jews considered them half-breeds, part Jew and part Gentile, the Samaritans claimed descent from the sons of Joseph, Manesseh and Ephriam, however.
The Lord came and sat down on the well’s entrance, He was weary and tired at the noon hour. He was weary then and He is weary today with our unbelief and rebellions.
He sat down to wait for those who were thirsty to come and drink. He would offer living water to satisfy the soul. He waited and a needy sinner came, She had been married five times, two more times than the Jewish tradition allowed. She did not have a husband now, possibly she had someone else’s husband living with her. She was a guilty sinner and obviously rejected by most of the citizens. The time most people would come to the well would generally be in the cool of the day or in the early morning. The women would also come in groups, not alone. The fact that she came in the heat of the day and alone spoke much about her reputation, but Jesus did not ignore her, he invited her to ask for living water, so she would never thirst again. She received it and ran hurriedly back into the city and told the men of the city and they came out to see for themselves, no doubt they recognized the great change in the woman. The wells of this world had not satisfied her thirst for joy and peace, but now, she had been satisfied with living water from a loving Savior. This is the only thing that will satisfy a sinful, thirsty soul.
